When should you hire the agency instead?

There are four situations where an agency is the better purchase and it would be dishonest to argue otherwise.

• You need more than about fifteen pages, or a custom web application rather than a website.
• Several stakeholders need managing. If a board or a marketing committee has to sign off, a project manager is doing real work.
• You need guaranteed continuity. One person gets ill and goes on holiday. A team absorbs that; an individual cannot.
• You want the process itself. Some owners genuinely value the workshops, the brand deck and the weekly call. That is a legitimate thing to buy.

What are you actually paying for in an agency quote?

Roughly: an office lease, a project manager, an account manager, a designer, a developer, and the cost of winning your business in the first place. The design work itself is a minority of the invoice.

That structure is not waste when the project needs it. On a fifteen-person build with a compliance review, coordination is the job. On a single-location café, it is four people being paid to relay messages about a website one person could have finished.

Is the quality actually the same?

The design standard is the thing to judge, and you can judge it directly rather than taking anyone's word: look at the concept builds and decide whether they look like a template.

What is measurably different is speed and access. Edits come back in 48 hours because there is no queue. What is measurably worse is capacity: when the book is full, new builds wait, and an agency would simply assign someone else.
